Rockstar doesn’t think a game is complete unless there are some random series collectibles included; L.A. Noire has two series: newspapers and gold film reels [update: with DLC there is also a “Badge Pursuit Challenge”]. (This post is for finding film reels; if you are looking for the newspapers, check this post.) I think these searches for random objects are tedious and not very enjoyable at all, but you have to find all these newspapers and gold film reels to get 100% completion (and thus to unlock the L.A. Noire The City of Angels Achievement, for 80 gamer points), and you have to find all the gold film reels to unlock the L.A. Noire Hollywoodland Achievement, for 30 gamer points.

Thankfully, despite the tedium, there are gamers out there who make video walkthroughs for things like this. Here are some good video walkthroughs that I have found to help find all the L.A. Noire gold film reel locations by Feber20.

If you would rather use a map, here is a screenshot of my L.A. Noire Gold Film Reel Locations map taken from the Rockstar Social Club website. Rockstar has made a wonderful website to help players track their progress through L.A. Noire. Once you are registered, click on “Checklist” in the navigation bar. At the bottom of that page, there is a section for Los Angeles Map, where I got the screenshot mentioned above. This map is very interactive, and you can use it to locate film reels, newspapers, landmarks, and street crimes. It’s a very useful tool that I strongly recommend.
