Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 – Efficient Campaign Strategy

November 25, 2011 By SLee 4 Comments

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 ScreenshotIn Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Infinity Ward and Activision (once again) keep the campaign short and sweet. Following the precedent set by Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2, the 10-hour single player story in Modern Warfare 3 won’t keep you away from the multiplayer or Spec Ops action for too long.

But if campaign completion and achievements are important to you, here are some campaign strategy tips to keep your efficiency at a maximum.

Play the Modern Warfare 3 Campaign on Veteran Difficulty… the First Time

When I buy video games, I like to move through them quickly. The fastest, most efficient way to complete Modern Warfare 3 — while also keeping an eye on achievements — is to play on Veteran difficulty. As the hardest of the four difficulty settings in the Call of Duty games, the Veteran gameplay will be more of a challenge than the easier settings, but it will allow you to unlock more achievements.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Achievements requiring Veteran Difficulty:

  • The Big Apple – 25G: Complete “Black Tuesday” and “Hunter Killer” on Veteran difficulty.
  • Out of the Frying Pan… – 25G: Complete “Persona Non Grata”, “Turbulence”, and “Back on the Grid” on Veteran difficulty.
  • Payback – 25G: Complete “Mind the Gap”, “Goalpost”, and “Return to Sender” on Veteran difficulty.
  • City of Lights – 25G: Complete “Bag and Drag” and “Iron Lady” on Veteran difficulty.
  • The Darkest Hour – 25G: Complete “Eye of the Storm”, “Blood Brothers”, and “Stronghold” on Veteran difficulty.
  • This is the End – 25G: Complete “Scorched Earth”, “Down the Rabbit Hole”, and “Dust to Dust” on Veteran difficulty.
  • The Best of the Best – 100G: Complete the campaign on Hardened or Veteran difficulty.

While completing the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 campaign on Veteran difficulty, you will unlock all of the non-difficulty-specific achievements as well. This means that you can complete the entire campaign one time instead of completing the game once on an easier setting and then coming back to play through the entire campaign again.

Pick Up the Smaller Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Achievements on an Easier Difficulty

When you play through MW3 the first time, your objective is to complete the campaign. Some of the achievements in Modern Warfare 3 require attention of their own. Rather than trying to get all of the achievements at once, it can be more effective to come back for the smaller achievements on an easier difficulty. Unlike other console games — like Halo 3, where you have to play at least on Regular difficulty to unlock the achievements — you can get the smaller achievements in Modern Warfare 3 single player even on the Recruit difficulty.

Modern Warfare 3 — smaller achievements for your second play through:

  • Jack the Ripper – 20G: Melee 5 enemies in a row in Single Player or Special Ops.
  • Informant – 20G: Collect 22 Intel Items.
  • Scout Leader – 35G: Collect 46 Intel Items.
  • This Is My Boomstick – 20G: Kill 30 enemies with the XM25 in “Black Tuesday.”
  • What Goes Up… – 20G: Destroy all the choppers with only the UGV’s grenade launcher in “Persona Non Grata.”
  • For Whom the Shell Tolls – 20G: Destroy all targets during the mortar sequence with only 4 shells in “Back on the Grid.”
  • Kill Box – 20G: Kill 20 enemies with the Chopper Gunner in a single run in “Return to Sender.”
  • Danger Close – 20G: Take down a chopper with an AC-130 smoke grenade in “Bag and Drag.”
  • Ménage à Trois – 20G: Destroy 3 tanks with a single 105mm shot in “Iron Lady.”)
  • Nein – 20G: Kill 9 enemies with A-10 strafing runs in “Scorched Earth.”
  • Flight Attendant (secret achievement) – 20G: Kill all 5 enemies during the zero-g sequence in “Turbulence.”

Breaking the Modern Warfare 3 Xbox 360 achievements (or PlayStation 3 trophies) into two groups like this will give you a huge boost in single player efficiency. With only one complete play through and a little cleaning up afterwards, you’ll be back to your Spec Ops and multiplayer gaming pownage in no time, and with more gamer points to brag about.

November Video Game Pre-Orders: 2 More Weeks of Releases

November 19, 2011 By SLee Leave a Comment

The first half of November has been history-making in the video game industry.

  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 broke sales records with over $775 million made in five days.
  • Bethesda finally released another chapter in the Elder Scrolls series with Skyrim.
  • The Xbox 360 version of the flagship Xbox title Halo: Combat Evolved was released.

This is certainly a tough couple of weeks for lesser-known titles to follow, but follow they must. Here are some of my pre-order picks (that is, you should buy these video games):

WWE ’12: Release Date 11/22/11

I haven’t played a professional wrestling game since WCW/nWo Revenge on Nintendo 64, but this one looks like fun. Available for Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii, WWE ’12 offers several new features to wrestling simulations. THQ has created a “Predatory Technology” gameplay system, making the gameplay even more “realistic” (as ironic as that may be), allowing gamers to perform “bone-crushing moves” and create their own custom superstars.

If you pre-order from Amazon, you get Pre-Order Price Guarantee and the Release-Date Delivery option. Xbox 360 and PS3 pre-orders also qualify for a $10 promotional Amazon Credit. Click here to claim yours.

The King of Fighters XIII: Release Date 11/22/11

Another fighting game coming out next week is The King of Fighters XIII. Touted as “the biggest, best high-definition KOF game yet,” KOF XIII offers smooth, stable net functionality with global online play and tons of console-exclusive content, and is available for Xbox 360 and PS3.

In addition to the standard Pre-Order Price Guarantee and Release-Date Delivery, gamers who pre-order this title from Amazon also get 4 CDs of music spanning the legendary KOF series’ 15+ year history. Pre-order your copy here.

Tekken Hybrid: Release Date 11/22/11

This PS3 exclusive, is chock-full of gaming goodness:

  • Tekken Tag Tournament HD
  • Tekken Blood Vengeance 3D The Movie
  • Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Prologue
  • A physical art book
  • 2 full length music CDs
  • Tekken themed costumes and accessories for PSN Home

The standard price guarantee and delivery options apply, but sadly, Amazon doesn’t offer any other promotions for this pre-order. You can order your package of Tekken goodies here.

Assassin’s Creed Revelations for PC: Release Date 11/29/11

Assassin's Creed Revelations: PCThis month PC gamers finally get a chance to get their hands on Assassin’s Creed Revelations. The Windows 7 release date is 11/29. Pre-order from Amazon and get pre-order price guarantee, release-date delivery, and two exclusives: “Altair outfit” single player skin and the Best Of Assassin’s Creed digital soundtrack download.

Don’t Miss Black Friday Video Games Deals

If these deals aren’t enough, be sure to keep an eye on Amazon’s Black Friday Video Games campaign. It starts on Monday, November 21, and is sure to offer something you can game on.

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Review

November 17, 2011 By SLee 1 Comment

Pros: Dynamic choice and consequence system, multiple play-through options, interesting plot, great soundtrack and graphics, and high replay value.

Cons: Lackluster enemies, less than stellar stealth and combat mechanics, and an upgrade system that’s too easy to overpower.

A Secret Pre-Order Bonus for MW3: Check Your Email

November 9, 2011 By SLee Leave a Comment

Last week I reminded you to pre-order Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. At the time, Amazon was advertising several bonuses for gamers who pre-ordered — some credits for gaming music and a headset, a free avatar download code, and a wallpaper for your computer.

Xbox Live 12-Month Gold Subscription

Compared to other pre-order bonuses, the MW3 launch appeared to be rather lackluster. Or so I thought until I checked my email this morning. There was a secret pre-order bonus for MW3 that Amazon didn’t announce, or at least didn’t make a big deal about it. [Read more…]

How to Easily Open a Stuck Xbox 360 Tray (DVD Drive)

November 6, 2011 By SLee 1 Comment

Xbox Logo Ceiling

My wife and I just moved. In the process something must have happened to my Xbox 360 because when I went to turn it on today, the tray was stuck. Immediately there was fear and worry. Who wants a stuck Xbox 360 tray? Not me! How will I ever play games again? And what will I do when my pre-order from Amazon shows up and I have a stuck Xbox 360 tray?

I pushed the eject button… nothing.

I pushed it again… still nothing.

I pushed and held it… yet again, no tray movement.

Thankfully, I already had my internet hooked up, so I googled the issue and found this simple solution. [Read more…]

Pre-Order Bonuses for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (and More)

November 2, 2011 By SLee Leave a Comment

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 Screenshot
Amazon usually does a great job with promotions for video game pre-orders (meaning you get great deals for buying something you were going to get anyway). With less than a week until the release date of Modern Warfare 3, the latest in the increasingly popular Call of Duty franchise, Amazon is stacking up the pre-order bonuses. [Read more…]

Three Guest Blog Networks (and Why They Suck)

October 20, 2011 By SLee 3 Comments

Guest Blog Networks

If you’ve been blogging for a while, you’ve probably realized that it takes a LOT of time to make it work. Sure, technologically, the blog will stay there as long as you pay your hosting fees, but if you want a thriving, engaging blog that brings lots of traffic (and lots of money) you have to keep feeding it with new content.

The problem for many bloggers is that they don’t have time to frequently and consistently write quality posts. I’ve been there. Having (or building) a successful blog is a full-time job, and for bloggers who are trying to make a go of it on the side will almost certainly run into this problem.

For a while, I tried to feed my starving blog by getting guest blog posts. In my despair, I came across three blog networks: Web Traffic Control, Blogger Link Up, and My Blog Guest.

Here’s a critical overview of why I think they suck.

Web Traffic Control

This website is based on the idea that people who have something to advertise will pay people with a blog to publish a guest blog post about the product or service they are advertising. Web Traffic Control is the “service” that brings the two parties together. The advertiser pays WTC $30 per post. WTC keeps half the money, publishes the post on your blog, and gives you, the blogger, $15.

That doesn’t sound too bad, right? So why does Web Traffic Control suck? Several reasons:

  1. You have to be at least a Google Page Rank 2. Realistically, if you are any good at blogging, this isn’t that hard to do, but it does take time.
  2. You have to have a self-hosted WordPress blog to participate. Though WordPress is one of the best blogging software options available, not every blogger uses it, and not all the bloggers who use it are self-hosting (even though they probably should be if they hope to make any serious money).
  3. You have to grant WTC login credentials as an editor. Though the system appears to be set up to publish blog posts automatically, that is without someone from WTC personally accessing your site, the idea of giving login credentials to an outside party certainly creates a sense of uneasiness.
  4. NO ONE IS USING IT! The first three issues might not be such a big deal if Web Traffic Control actually worked. The problem is that they don’t have enough advertisers participating to supply the bloggers with any content to publish. I’ve had an account set up with WTC for a few months and haven’t had any posts show up. Until more advertisers start using it, WTC is a waste of time.

Blogger Link Up

The Blogger Link Up network is low-tech in comparison to WTC. It’s essentially an email newsletter sent out to everyone on the list three times a week. Users who have guest posts to give away or blog owners who need a specific blog post written enter that information on the website, and the offers and requests get sent out to the people on the list.

Each newsletter starts off with a brief message from the webmaster (which is sometimes useful and sometimes not so useful), and then the list of offers and requests.

On the positive side, I think the BLU is a great concept for networking with other people in the blogosphere. And if you keep your eye out, you can come across some good opportunities (I had an article published on a Page Rank 7 site through a connection I made with it).

The problem is there is no quality control. Just like any other free-to-use ad site (cf. Craigslist) the offers are only as good as the person behind them. This usually means a lot of junk posts. The offer in the newsletter might seem good, but when you get the final product, more often than not it turns out to be a poorly-written, barely grammatical piece of fluff content with no substance and a link in the author byline to a site that is not related to the actual blog post at all.

I regret some of the junk that I’ve published on my sites through shady offers on Blogger Link Up.

My Blog Guest

Similar to the Blogger Link Up, My Blog Guest is a network of writers and publishers. Instead of being a newsletter, it feels more like a social networking site where there is actually the possibility of interaction between the two parties.

My Blog Guest has one up on BLU because they review the articles in the offers to make sure they are original, and for the most part they are of higher quality than BLU. The ones I’ve received are grammatical, have substance, and are usually written by someone with experience in the field they’re writing about.

The problem? The articles lack panache. They are informative but impersonal. You might get some search engine traffic from these, but dry content isn’t going to connect with your readers.

Back to the Basics

Guest Blog Post Safari

After my brief sojourn in the safari of guest blog post hunting, I’d like to think I’ve returned a wiser blogger. By and large, it’s a barren wasteland, filled with ghost towns, sickly game, and jackals.

I’m sorry to my regular readers for publishing some of the refuse that has been on my blog recently. I’ve realized the error of my ways and will be more selective in what is published from here on out.

If you are running a blog of your own, hopefully this post will help you learn from my mistakes. Don’t publish fluff content just to keep the search engines happy; your readers are more important. If your schedule doesn’t allow you to post quality content as frequently as you planned, reduce your frequency, not the quality of your posts. Don’t partner with just anyone willing to throw you a bone — publish good content by people with authority in your niche.

Do it well, or don’t do it at all.

Yet Another Netflix Announcement: No More Qwikster

October 10, 2011 By SLee 1 Comment

DVDs will be staying at netflix.com

Netflix DVDNetflix customers were greeted today with an email announcing yet another change in Netflix’s plans for the future.

A few weeks ago, Netflix announced a split in the company. Online video streaming would continue under the Netflix brand, and a subsidiary named Qwikster would take over the DVD side of the business. Each brand would have distinct operations and a separate website.

In a rare case of a big company actually listening to its customers, Netflix’s announcement today was in direct response to customer complaints about Netflix’s proposed plan. Two distinct services with two distinct websites would not be user-friendly for customers of both brands.

Thankfully, Netflix relented of its awful plan. In case you didn’t receive it, here is a copy of the email:

It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password…in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

We’re constantly improving our streaming selection. We’ve recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we’ve added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS.

We value you as a member, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get your movies & TV shows.

Respectfully,

The Netflix Team

Will this change in Netflix’s plans have an effect on your subscription? Is Netflix’s quick about-face the sign of a company dedicated to customer satisfaction? Or is it the sign of a lack of clear direction and leadership — a lack of confidence? Leave your comments below.

Use Mini-Sessions in Life is Crime to Maximize Progress

October 7, 2011 By SLee 69 Comments

Mobile games are fun, but if you’re like me, you don’t have a lot of time to play them at any given time. Fortunately, the game structure of the new hit Android app Life is Crime is serendipitously conducive to this pattern of gaming.

Like the Facebook game The Sims Social, you have limited resources in Life is Crime, specifically energy and stamina. Use up your resources, and you won’t be able to do very much until you get some more. Again, much like The Sims Social, you can buy more energy and stamina, or wait until they replenish on their own.

Thankfully, they do replenish. This means you can use them all up, put your Android device down, and come back for some more action a few hours later. By rationing your gaming in these mini-sessions, you can quickly make a name for yourself in the Life is Crime universe without dropping wads of cash on in-game purchases.

Here is a breakdown of  SLee-style mini-sessions in Life is Crime.

Grab the Cash When Life is Crime Loads

Life is Crime loads you in your safe house, where you are greeted with a menu of some general stats. In the middle of the stats, there is an option to “Collect.” This is money you earn for controlling locations. Tap the button to get your money. After you get your money, accept any friend invites or gifts available, and then…

Hit the Streets

After tapping the large, obvious button, you are loaded in your “Gamefeed.” You can use this to see what your friends are doing or find people to fight, but there are more productive things to do in your mini-session in Life is Crime.

You can get more done by going to the Map. Pick a location close to you (the closer locations will use less energy, therefore maximizing your productivity) and see if there is anyone with a similar rank on the leader board at this location.

2 Reasons to fight someone with a similar rank:

  1. If you fight someone with a higher rank, you will most likely be demolished.
  2. If you fight someone with a much lower rank, your rep will take a temporary hit for picking on small fries.

When you find someone with a similar rank, tap on their name to see their stats. If your attack and defense are better than theirs, you can probably when a fight with them. Tap “fight” to be taken to the fight screen; then duke it out until you win.

In each round, a few things happen:

  • You burn one stamina point.
  • You (potentially) earn money.
  • You earn XP.
  • (If you fight with someone through the location menu instead of the friend stream) you earn points on the leader board for that location.

When you win the fight, you will earn extra money, XP, and location points. This is the fastest way to move quickly up the leader board.

No More Stamina? Start Using Energy

After you use up all your stamina, it’s time to start using your energy.

You can contact a dealer for a delivery of stolen goods or drugs. Drop these at the location to get more money and location points.

Use your remaining energy to steal, rob, or whatever other activity is available at your location for more money, XP, and location points.

When all your energy is used up, you won’t be able to do anymore money-making activities until your next mini-session. Before you’re done, you can head to the shop to see if there are any items that you can upgrade with your newly-earned money.

Come back a few hours later when your energy and stamina have recovered and repeat these steps. Using these mini-sessions in Life is Crime, you will quickly rise in the ranks of the criminal underworld.

Marketing Secret: Why the Amazon Kindle Fire is Sold Below Cost

October 5, 2011 By SLee 2 Comments

Amazon Kindle FireLast week, Amazon announced its very own tablet to the market: the Kindle Fire. Similar to other tablets already available to consumers, yet with a very Amazon-ish spin, the Kindle Fire has received extra notice because of its low price point.

Though it is arguably less powerful or functional than its main competitor — Apple’s iPad — the Kindle Fire carries a price tag of only $199, a full $300 cheaper than the iPad. Moreover, Amazon is selling the Kindle Fire at a loss. Estimates vary, but it seems that Amazon is losing at least $10 per unit.

The Method Behind the Amazon Kindle Fire Madness

Of course Amazon is doing everything it can to get its tablet into as many hands as possible. As a late-comer on the tablet scene, Amazon has some ground to cover if it hopes to gain some of the market share, and one part of this goal necessarily includes the price.

But selling units is just the beginning. Losing money on the device itself is not a winning business model if that’s all Amazon were trying to do. Certainly, this is not Amazon’s end goal.

Borrowing the Console Video Gaming Business Model

I’m not privy to any insider information, but it seems apparent from the outside what Amazon is up to. Similar to the strategy of console video gaming businesses — such as Microsoft’s Xbox or Sony’s PlayStation — Amazon is creating a system with the Kindle Fire that will generate more sales and revenue from their other products.

For years console video game businesses have been selling their consoles — very expensive, high-tech pieces of equipment — at cost or cheaper and then making up their loss in the game sales (the price for a new release for Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 is currently $59.99). These business minimize the barrier to entry with drastically discounted hardware, creating a highly targeted group of customers who will buy the games for these consoles for years after.

Amazon is clever to realize the potential of this model in the tablet market. In its marketing copy, Amazon emphasizes the ease of accessing movies, TV shows, music, magazines, and books from the Kindle Fire — additional services that are all offered from Amazon. With an Android-powered OS, there are tons of apps available for the Kindle Fire, also available for purchase through Amazon. By ushering customers into “Amazon Land,” the Kindle Fire practically creates a captive audience for more Amazon products.

Moving beyond the basics of the console video game model, Amazon has the ability to increase the precision of its marketing with its proprietary web browser: Amazon Silk. For consumers, Amazon Silk is supposed to create a faster, more powerful web browsing experience; but for Amazon, users of the Silk browser stoke the marketing fire with the fuel of browsing data, which (despite any promises of anonymization) will surely be used by Amazon to refine their marketing strategies.

The Wave of the Future?

Though this model isn’t new, this is the first time that it’s been used in the tablet industry. And if it’s successful for Amazon Kindle Fire, I wonder how long it will be before others start to follow suit. Will we start seeing Apple tablets priced below cost?
